The evidence supporting the idea that microfilament-mediatedcell shape changes produce morphogenetic movements of the salivaryepithelium is reviewed. The correlations between microfilamentsand morphogenesis and microtubules and morphogenesis, as revealedby experiments with cytochalasin B and colchicine respectively,are compared and contrasted. On the basis of a correlation betweenmicrofilament integrity and epithelial morphogenesis, and anactin-like nature of microfilaments to bind heavy meromyosin,it is proposed that microfilament contraction is required forcleft formation in the epithelium. Several ways in which microfilamentactivity might be regulated during morphogenesis are discussedin the framework of experiments that may comment on such regulation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Queens of two species of the ant genus Myrmica bonded to workers of the species M. rubra L. as the latter emerge from the pupal skin can use these workers nearly 6 months later to arrest gyne formation in sex-competent larvae of the same species. Queens of M. ruginodis Nylander var. microgyria (Brian & Brian, 1949) are as good at this as the natural M. rubra , but those of M. sabuleti Meinert (of a race close to M. scabrinodis) are not. Though the M. sabuleti queens induce normal aggression against sexualizing larvae, they are unable to prevent some or all of the workers feeding larvae as though they were queenless. However, queens from different colonies of M. rubra adopted by queenless populations of workers in spring, control their brood-rearing behaviour perfectly. M. rubra workers from different colonies bring gynes to maturity from female sexual larvae at different average sizes. When workers from two such sources are mixed in equal proportions, the size of gyne larva produced after a week's culture corresponds with that of one of the worker populations; it is not intermediate in size. Also, large workers can rear larger gyne-larvae than small workers of the same age. This is only true if the workers have been living with queens all the time from emergence as an imago to the moment the experiment was set. Size mixtures only achieve the same size larvae as a pure culture of small workers would. A possible reason for this is that small workers exclude the larger ones from the nursery areas of the nest.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The structure of Trepomonas agilis communis Klebs is described from light and electron microscope observations on 2 clone isolates of the organism. The surface membrane shows marked differentiation into an extremely thick (16 nm) symmetric membrane which covers the greater part of the body, and a thinner (∼ 10–12 nm) asymmetric membrane which lines the 2 lateral oral grooves and the posterior channel connecting them; a similar asymmetric membrane covers the flagella. Thorium dioxide staining suggests a denser distribution of acidic carbohydrate groups on the asymmetric membrane. The pathways of cytoplasmic streaming observed in the living flagellate coincide with those of microtubule bands arising close to the flagellar basal bodies and it is suggested that the bands play an orienting role in the streaming of food vacuoles. The contractile vacuole undergoes diastole in the anterior (postnuclear) cytoplasm, and is formed by coalescence of smaller vesicles. At systole the entire vacuole migrates to the posterior extremity to discharge into the posterior channel; the route of exit lacks guiding structural elements. Features of the flagellate's physiology and organization are discussed in relation to the observed lack of mitochondria, microbodies and Golgi apparatus in diplomonads.  相似文献

Experiments on leaves of tomato, sugar beet and cocksfoot show that uptake of diquat and paraquat, although rapid in the light, is increased by darkness and therefore takes place through the cuticle and not through stomata. Darkness for as little as 4 hr. increased uptake almost twofold. Diquat and paraquat are rapidly and strongly adsorbed both to leaf tissue and to extraneous matter on the leaf surface. Uptake in the field is so rapid that rain immediately after treatment has little adverse effect.  相似文献

A new forecasting system for virus yellows incidence in sugar beet in the UK has been devised using multiple regression analyses. The forecast equations include data on (1) the previous year's virus incidence, (2) temperature in January and February and (3) the timing of the spring migration of Mytus persicae. Forecasts using the first two of these variables account for 63% of the variance in virus incidence in the main beet growing area of Eastern England and give growers information in time to decide on whether to apply aphicidal granules at drilling to control the vectors of the disease. Forecasts using all three variables account for 87% of the variance in virus incidence and can forewarn growers and the sugar industry of the likelihood of an epidemic. Forecasts for the northern and western regions of the beet growing area are derived from the forecast for the eastern region.  相似文献

The high-spired gastropod Palaeozygopleuru (Loxonematacea) of the Hamilton Group (Middle Devonian) in New York State is often entrusted by the trepostomatous bryozoan Leptotrypella (Hetero-trypidae). The form of this enerustation leads us to infer a secondary occupant that dwelled in empty shells of Palaeozygopleura while the bryozoan grew upon them. Encrusted specimens usually have an open aperture, thin or no enerustation on the apertural side of the gastropod shell. and thick encrustation on the abapertural side. While the aperture is invariably open. the columellar and parictal lips of the aperture, and the apertural face of the first whorl are usually encrusted. While the gastropod is alive, this area rests upon the dorsal surface of the foot and the remainder of the shell rests upon the substratc. These encrustation patterns suggest that an occupant of the shell. other than the gastropexl. prevented overgrowth of the aperture and oriented the shell aperture-down. This allowed ahapertural growth of the bryozoan. The presence of thin encrustation on the apertural side of the shell is problematical. It requires either the presence of a secondary occupant capable of holding a thinly encrusted shell off the substrate, or the ability of the juvenile bryozoan colony to extend onto portions of the shell that were in contact with the substrate. The presence of a secondary occupant. such as a sipunculan worm. capable of lifting the shell, but usually resting it aperture-down on the substrate seems the most suitable explanation for the nature of the encrustation.
